Independence Day
John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Here in America in just a few days we will celebrate our nation’s Independence Day. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th 1776, by the Founding Fathers, delegates of the 2nd Continental Congress. It declared that the 13 Colonies were not subject to or subordinate to Britain monarch’s, King George III and were free and independent states. The earlier settlers of America came here to have freedom to worship God as they saw fit without a state church’s interference. Britian did not like them breaking away from the church of England and tried many ways to deter their freedom. There were many that died so that Americans could be free.
Our scripture today tells us when we know the truth we will be free. The word free here means to liberate or deliver. I am sure that there were many that knew what those that had come to America for was true but for some reasons they were not willing to take the truth and be free. They had gotten used to the darkness and didn’t really want to change. We live in a world that is much like that today. Many people have come to the knowledge of the truth, Jesus is the truth: John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. They know that Jesus is the truth but will not accept Him. In doing so they forfeit the freedom He can give.
Many are like the Jews of Jesus day and didn’t realize they were in bondage to the law which none of them could keep in it’s original form. There was no permanent remedy for their sin, all they could do was offer a sacrifice and roll the sin over for a year and when the year was up they had to do it all over again. But Jesus offered Himself as payment for our sin debt in order to give us our freedom from the bondage of sin. If He has set you free you are free indeed.
Have you had a Independence Day? A day you can point to and say that is the day I accepted the truth (Jesus Christ)? Mine was Sunday June 18th 1978 the day I asked Christ to save me. What was your day? If you haven’t had that day yet you can. All you have to do is pray and confess that you are a sinner and ask Jesus to save you and according to His word He will. You will have to believe it in your heart and confess it with your mouth.
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Then my, friend, you have had your Independence Day that no man can take from you. Our country’s independence can be taken by another government or country, it has not happened yet but it could. But if Jesus has given you your freedom no man or government can take that away from you.
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!!!
