Lost Nerve

Matthew14:28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

Jesus was walking on the water in the early morning hours and the disciples saw Him and were frightened, thinking He was a spirit. He told them not to be afraid, that it was Him. Peter being so brave asked to walk on the water to Jesus and Jesus told him he could. But when Peter got to looking at the storm he lost his nerve, began to sink and cried for Jesus to save him.

We knock Peter a lot because he said a lot of stuff and usually got into trouble afterward. But

I think we can all really identify with Peter if we will be honest. It is easy to let circumstances cause you to lose your nerve to do something.

Back in March of 2023 my wife and I were involved in an auto accident, yes, I was driving. It was a serious accident, but, it could have been much worse. I was determined not to let this accident cause me to lose my nerve about driving. I kept on driving mostly locally and finally I realized that if I didn’t get out of my comfort area of driving, I might never leave my local area again. I had to go to a major city for my wife to see a specialist for her eyes. Different ones wanted to drive us but I was determined to do it myself. Since that day I have not had the hidden fear of driving in a lot of traffic. Just this week we took a trip that really showed me that I had regained something I had lost in the accident. I might have a problem tomorrow but for now I feel like the old me driving.

Peter lost his nerve in the storm but Jesus came to the rescue and they came to the ship safely. None of the other disciples were willing to ask to walk on the water and while Peter looked at the wrong thing (the storm) he did something they never did, he walked on water. Later in ministry Peter did many great works for the Lord but if his focus had totally been on the night he looked at the storm he might never have done any of the works that he did.

You and I have had circumstances that if we totally focus on will hinder or stop us completely from doing what we need to be doing for the Lord. For me an accident caused me to lose my nerve, for you it may be something totally different. Whatever it may be don’t let your circumstance cause you to lose your nerve. For you will find if that happens you will also lose your joy and peace.

Have a great day
