A Blessed Message Part 2

A BLESSED MESSAGE PART 2

Matthew 5:1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

The word blessed is used 9 times in this passage. Blessed means to be well off or happy. When we hear well off, many times we think of worldly things such as money and possessions. But the well off being spoken of here is inwardly, it speaks of one’s senses or inward feelings.

I started on these verses last week with intention of just doing one week on all of them but when I started I soon found that I couldn’t do them justice in one week, so we may be looking at these for the next few weeks.

In verse 4 we are told those that mourn (grieve, wail) shall be comforted. What are these mourning over? Could it be their past or might it be the condition of those around them? Truly as we look on the world around us today, wickedness and Godlessness on every hand and the world is rejoicing. That should trouble the Christian. Look at what John records about this.

John 16:20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

He records Jesus saying that we will be sorrowful but our sorrow will be turned into joy. Although He doesn’t say it we know from other scriptures that by the same token the un-Godly that are living it up now will have sorrow and regrets for all eternity, if they aren’t born again.

While we don’t need to be consumed with so much sorrow that we can’t function, it would be good for us to grieve for the lost and be concerned enough to have a burden for their souls. Enough that we would shed tears over their lost condition. If we mourn like this we shall be comforted.

Have a great day.
