Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

In the chapter leading up to this verse Joshua is reminding the children of Israel what God had already done for them. How he had brought them out of Egypt, how He had fought their battles for them, gave them a land they did not have to buy, cities they did not build and food to eat that they did not plant. He goes on to tell them to fear God and serve Him and to put away the false gods and serve the only true God. That brings us to the verse I want us to think on today.

Choose you this day whom you will serve… they had to make a choice and we have to make a choice, will I serve the Lord or will I serve the gods which are not gods at all? We think that because we don’t have some image to worship we aren’t worshipping gods other than God. I would suggest to you that anything that you put above the Lord is a god. It could be work, maybe even family or the thing I see more and more in this day is pleasure, whether it be sports, travel, or anything you want to put there that gives the flesh pleasure. I’m in no way against working to live, the problem is when you live to work. We should love our family and desire to spend time with them. The danger comes when we put that above everything else. Then there is pleasure, I thing God wants us to be happy but when pleasing our flesh comes before Him, there is where the problem is.

Here is the key to putting God first and serving him. Joshua said “as for me and my house we will serve the LORD”. We need the men to step up in their role as leader of the house and purpose in their hearts that they will serve the LORD and it is not left for discussion in the rest of the family living under in his home. I’m afraid we fail as head of household to be the spiritual leaders we are called to be. I understand in many homes the man of the house is not right with the Lord and it falls to the wife. She has to be the spiritual leader and make spiritual decisions, which should be to serve God. Men, if you aren’t the spiritual leader of your home put your big boy pants on and start to lead. The life of the family depends on it.

Can you say as for me and my house we will serve the LORD? I sure hope so.

Have a great day
