God Doesn't Look At The Things We Do

GOD DOESN’T LOOK AT THE THINGS WE DO

1Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

Samuel had been sent to the house of Jesse in order to anoint a king in place of Saul whom God had rejected for his disobedience. When Samuel got there he thought he knew for sure it would be the first son of Jesse that was made to pass before him. But he was not God’s man, then the other 6 sons passed by and none of them were the one. Samuel asked Jesse if he had any other sons and he said he did, his youngest son and that he was out keeping the sheep. Samuel told them to go get him. When David arrived the Lord told Samuel that he was the one and he anointed him.

Here was the youngest and probably the smallest of the brothers, but God saw something in his heart that Samuel could not see. Luke tells us in Acts that David was a man after God’s own heart.

Acts 13:22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

My friend I fear we are too quick to make snap judgments about people before we get to know them. They may have the looks, but have a wicked heart. Some may be great talkers but in fact are very shallow in the things of Christ. You have heard the saying that clothes makes the man, I can assure you that is not always the case. You cannot know someone by the clothes they wear. I have heard a story told many times about a man that lived in our area and he worked in livestock and hauled livestock for years. He would buy a pair of overhauls and wear them till they fell off of him. One day a cousin of mine and another man were going to look at a newer truck and he wanted to go along. When they got to the dealership the other two fellows made a trade for a couple of trucks. Their friend was looking at a bigger truck but no salesman went to try and help him because of his dress. One salesman remarked to my cousin “how could a man like that ever buy a truck like he is looking at?” My cousin told him if he bought it he would pay cash for it and he did. He had it in those old ragged overhauls. So we can’t judge a book by its cover.

But, even if we get to know people really well we cannot know their heart, we feel we know, but I have been deceived before. You cannot know anyone’s salvation condition for sure except your own, I have said many times I know to whom I belong and I’m near positive about my wife but we can’t see another’s heart.

If God sees the heart maybe we just ought to love people and let Him take care of the deciding what they will or won’t be.

Have a great day
