In Remembrance

In Remembrance

Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

1Corinthians 11:24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

A few days ago was Memorial Day weekend, which to many is nothing more than a three day weekend. But Memorial Day was started just after the Civil War. Graves of fallen soldiers were decorated with flowers. The day was known then as Decoration Day and many in our area still call it that today. It was a way to remember those that had given their lives for the cause that they had fought for. Today, as well as the Veterans graves being decorated with the American Flag or flowers, people decorate graves of loved ones who have died as a way of remembering them.

But in our scripture Jesus tells us that when we take the Lord’s Supper we are doing it in remembrance of Him. He doesn’t ask us to take flowers to a tomb where He no longer is or to place the Christian Flag somewhere. He merely asks us (Christians) to take His supper to remember what He did for us at Calvary. No matter when or how often we observe it, it is to help us remember and show others we remember.

He allowed them to beat Him, tear flesh from him with the scourge, and pierce his hands and feet with nails. He shed His precious blood for a lost and dying world. Why would he do this? Simply put, because He loved us.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

1John 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

We should remember everyday what Jesus has done for us and how much he loved us so that every day of a Christians life should be a day of remembrance of what Jesus has done, is doing and will do for us.

Have a great day
