Looking Back

Luke 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

I believe Jesus is telling us in this verse that once we have come to salvation that we don’t need to be looking back at the life we have left behind. Some people, you will find in talking with them, really long for the past life more than they look forward to the things that the Lord has for them in the future. While we need to remember where we have been brought from, we never need to try and live in the past. We need to go forward and as Paul tells us in:

Philippians 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

This should be our goal.

I know that if you are looking back you can’t see where you are going. A farmer will tell you when you are plowing out a crop you look ahead or else you will plow up a great deal of your crop. If you are driving and always looking back you will run into something sooner or later.

Do you remember Lot’s wife? She and the rest of her family were told not to look back but to escape to the mountain, but she looked back.

Genesis 19:26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

She surely would tell us that looking back wasn’t worth it.

The children of Israel had been delivered from bondage in Egypt and had crossed the Red Sea and they began to look back and remember Egypt:

Numbers 11:5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:

They must have really liked garlic and onions. They got to thinking about Egypt so much that they wanted a new leader to take them back to Egypt.

Numbers14:4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt. Their looking back was a show of unbelief and shortly caused them to reject what God had planned for them. And wound up wandering in the wilderness for 40 years and all that were above 20 years old did not enter into the promised land.

Which way are you looking? Are you looking to the past and wanting to go back or are you looking forward? If you are looking back you can’t go forward so I hope you are looking forward to what the Lord has for you and what He is going to do!

Have a great day
