Take Care Of Your Own Business

John 21:21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? 22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou me.

Peter, who had just been told of his impending death by Jesus, looks at John and asks what about him. Jesus simply told Peter to mind his own affairs, as John would have his own affairs to tend to. Basically, Jesus told Peter mind your own affairs, and John will do the same. Many times we want to look at others and get in their business, when it is none of our own. Scripture tells us when we are to make other men’s business our affair, when we see them living outside the boundaries of the Word of God.

Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Having said that, we need to make sure we are in a position to help them and not be in a worst state than they are. Jesus had this in mind I think when he said:

Matthew 7:3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye 5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

When we are seeing spiritually well, then — and only then — can we help our brethren. But remember, we don’t always have to try and manage everyone’s business for them. I read this story last week, and the writer was anonymous on a fellow learning to mind his own business:

The man was walking down a street when he passed an insane asylum, and heard from the other side of the wall people chanting loudly 13, 13, 13, 13, on and on and he wondered, what they were yelling 13 for. When finally he found a hole in the wall and looked through it and immediately a fellow jabbed him in the eye with a stick and they went to chanting 14, 14, 14, 14. He said that day he learned to mind his own business.

Don’t wait till you are poked in the eye with a stick to start minding your own business, but 1 Thessalonians 2:12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

Thanks & have a great day,
