The Old Way

Jeremiah 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

We are living in a day where it seems everyone is looking for something new. A new “Bible”, a new way to sing, preach, pray and worship. This has been a problem for

years and years. In our scripture today God told Jeremiah to ask for the old paths which were a good way and walk in those ways. In doing this they could find rest for their souls, but, the people said we won’t do that. In other words they had deemed the old ways not good enough for them.

In Paul’s day men were looking for something new not satisfied with the old ways:

Acts 17:18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

These were looking for something new because they really didn’t want to hear about Jesus and his resurrection.

Today people say we need to change if we are going to win anyone to Christ, we need something new. I say we do not need anything new. All we need is the Gospel of Jesus Christ preached and taught with the unction of the Holy Ghost and that will get the job done. They say the old songs will not reach anyone and we need something that rocks the house in order to praise the Lord. I see more people moved by the old songs about the blood, the cross and about heaven than I ever do in songs about self or about this world. I don’t know about you but I am looking for a place of peace and rest in a city whose builder and maker is God. Man didn’t have one iota to do with it’s creation. Further more man could not save himself, it took the precious blood of Jesus to pay the sin debt we owed.

So I think I will stick with the old ways that were good enough for generations past and it will be good enough for generations to come till Jesus himself comes for His bride the church. If you want to get my attention sing me a song about Jesus, preach me a sermon about Jesus and His love for you and I.

Have a great day!
