Remember

Mark 8:14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.

15 And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread

17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?

18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?

Today many of us forget things on a daily basis, Bro Jimmy Pleasant once said “his forgetter was getting ahead of his rememberer” and I know in my case that is so true. It’s not that I don’t try to remember it just seems to be harder everyday to pull things out of memory that I know are there. Although there are things in my memory that I wish I could forget but they seem to come to mind all too easily. For instance when I was in the 1st grade of school, I was on the school bus when a car in front of us wrecked. It was only a one car crash but the man driving the car was pinned in and it was a gruesome scene. He was begging for help and no one could help him. It was awful for a kid to see and hear. That has been around 57 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Then on the other hand many things that happened yesterday I can’t remember.

The disciples were no different, they had seen many miraculous things and yet it seemed that they had forgotten them. When they discovered they didn’t bring bread for their journey, Jesus called them out in verse 18 of our scripture when He asked did they not see with their eyes or hear with their ears and had they forgotten?

When Christ died and was buried they had forgotten all of His teachings of how He would live again and would rise from the grave. They were so sorrowful and without hope it seemed. It was hard for them at first to accept the fact that He had risen from the dead. He appeared to them and Thomas still did not believe at first but soon did. They remembered.

I have heard and seen people that did not know who they were but when someone would go to talking about Jesus they remembered Him. I saw a man in the nursing home that sat all slumped over ,never speaking, seemingly not even aware of his surroundings. But, when they would start to sing the old church hymns he would straighten up in his chair and open his mouth and a beautiful voice would ring out the songs of faith. When the singing was over he would slump back over. He may have forgotten who he was or where he was but he never forgot who the Jesus they sang about was.

What got me started thinking down this road was what Jesus told his disciples;

1 Corinthians 11:24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

 We must never forget what Jesus did for us on the cross of Calvary. His body was broken for us and He shed His blood for us to save us from sin. We could not save ourselves but only the perfect sacrifice could. I never want to forget what He did for me and my hope is I never will. What can help us remember? Scripture .If we can saturate our minds with the word of God it will not be in vain. Remember this scripture ;

Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
