A Season
A SEASON
Luke 4:13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
This is the end of the devil’s temptation. Jesus had been in the wilderness for 40 days of fasting and being tempted of the devil. When Jesus came out of the wilderness He was hungry. This shows the human side of Christ. Even though He was 100% God, He also was 100% man, although without the sin that we all have in our lives. Can you imagine being 40 days without food, I dare say most of us can’t go 4 hours without food. Notice the devil said to Him turn this stone to bread. That was possible for Christ, but he would not give in to the devil.
Ephesians 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.
He did not combat him with arguments but with scripture. This would be his way of combating the devil in the three instances given here in Luke 4. The devil tried to get him to worship him promising he would give Him all the kingdoms of the world if He would. Then he tried to get Jesus to jump from the pinnacle of the temple, But every time Jesus answered with scripture. The devil cannot argue against scripture. We are told in James 4:7;
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Many people say if you will “resist the devil he will flee from you”, they leave off the first part of the verse “submit yourselves therefore to God”. You submit to God by keeping His word. Friend, you are not strong enough on your own to fend off your adversary you have to have to let the Lord do that through His word and power.
The scripture I used at the beginning said the devil departed from Him for a season. It does not say the devil left him and never bothered Jesus again. He only left for a season, which means a little while. But you can be sure Jesus had to deal with the devil again. Friend, if you resist the devil and he flees from you, be sure he will show up again. Know this, he will come at you many times when you are at some of your weakest moments. But if you will submit yourself to God and resist him he will have to flee again. Many is the time that I have found myself under attack and all I can do is plead the blood over myself. I tell the devil I am covered by the blood of Jesus Christ and he has no power against the blood. Guess what, he leaves for a while but he comes back attacking again sometimes within hours, sometimes longer. But it is not my power that puts the enemy on the run, instead it is the LORD.
Our best defense against our enemy is the Word of God and falling on our knees in prayer. Keep yourself committed to God and keep resisting and you will find the enemy leaving you for a while.
Have a great day!
