Did Jesus Ever Show A Sense Of Humor

DID JESUS EVER SHOW A SENSE OF HUMOR?

When you think of Jesus and His time on earth how do you picture Him? I see a lot of pictures that people think is Him, but I don’t think there were any cameras in His day, So these pictures are just an artist’s rendering of what they think He looked like and have been copied down through the years. In these renderings the man is shown as solemn looking and I know that he was serious about doing the work He had to do but I have to think that He had a sense of humor as I think scripture will show. Why do I think this? Again scripture tells us that a merry heart is like medicine.

Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

How do we have a merry heart? Happiness, joy and fellowship make the heart merry. When I think of a merry heart I think of laughter. You can be feeling bad or be troubled about situations and someone can come along and make you laugh and after a good laugh you will feel better. So based on that I really don’t see Jesus walking around and saying, “verily” in every situation. When I visit the sick I try and get them to laugh when appropriate. It seems to help them to forget about the sickness for a minute or two.

But in one particular statement Jesus made He made a remark that had to make the disciples chuckle. Even though He had just dealt with the rich young ruler who was unwilling to give up his riches and follow Jesus and had gone away sad, Jesus made a statement that had to get a chuckle from those around him.

Mark 10:24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Just looking at this it seems straight forward that it is hard for those that depend on their riches to enter into the kingdom. But the phrase “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle”, had to make the disciples laugh. I have heard it said that this was not a sewing needle but the entrance to the temple which was hard but if they could drag a camel that would bend its knees it was possible. But the Greek word here is

Rhaphis: pronounced hraf-ece' which means to sew, puncture or a needle. What would you do if you had heard that said? I would have laughed because it’s not humanly possible but if God wills it, it could happen. I don’t know if Jesus meant to be humorous here or not. But part of me thinks that He just may have been. He wants us to be happy and I don’t think there is anything wrong with having fun and laughing at the right things and in it’s place.

Have a great day
