Your Health
3 John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
John wrote this letter and although we can’t say for sure many think it was written to the Corinthians. In verse 1 he states it is to Gaius, who was saved and baptized at Corinth. In this verse John wished for 3 things: that he would prosper, be in health and his soul would prosper. Let’s look at these three for a moment. First he wished that Gaius would prosper. How did he want him to prosper? Was it materially? Most likely it was due to his wish for Gaius’s soul to prospered as it had already. Many think that God doesn’t want us to prosper materially, but I think he does as long as the material things don’t get in the way of us serving Him and putting Him first. How much more can you do for ministries if you have something to help them meet their needs. But many take a verse and change it and say it is wrong to have anything. But read carefully:
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
It says the love of money is the root of all evil, not money itself but the love of it. Many have chased the dollar to the point that nothing else matters, neither spiritually, family, or anything or anyone else.
Then John says he wished him to be in health. That is where my thought is today. If you have your health and Jesus you really have everything. When you are young you think you will never get sick. Oh you might have a stomach bug, the flu or something you get over in a few days. But with age comes illness and your health begins to fail you and you realize that things aren’t going to get a lot better. I know this first hand. You get a diagnosis that is not the best and you realize that if you had taken better care of yourself when you were younger things might be better today. My dad told me when I was in my mid twenties and felt 20ft tall and bulletproof that I had better take his advice and quit pushing myself like I was. Some times going into work on Monday morning and not getting off till Wednesday morning sometimes doing this 2-3 times a week. I slept 30 min here and 30 min there but I would wake and get back at it. Not eating healthy food just whatever I could out of a machine or if I got hungry enough I would pull in some where and get a burger and gobble it down going down the road. I wish I had taken care of myself better, but that’s water under the bridge. I am thankful for the health I have and know many prayers have been said for me over the years. My wish for you is to be in health just as Paul wished it for Gaius.
John must have heard that Gaius’s soul was prospering, he was growing in the Lord and he wanted him to continue and wanted him to prosper materially and be in health as his soul prospered. If your soul is prospering I can’t help but think everything else will fall into place in your life.
Take care of your body and soul!
Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Have a great day!!!
